Dublin City Council remove stockpiled materials in ‘illegal bonfire’ warning

Dublin City Council have shared a photo of ‘stockpiled materials’ ahead of Halloween, in a warning about illegal bonfires.

Hundreds of calls are made to Dublin Fire Brigade every Halloween, with bonfires and illegal fireworks usually the culprits surrounding the calls.

Some people who are getting ready for the season have begun stockpiling pallets and tyres for bonfires they may be having, but Dublin City Council have warned that these bonfires are illegal — and are seizing the ‘supplies.’

‘In the lead up to Halloween, Dublin City Council are continuing to identify & remove stockpiled materials, diverting it from burning on illegal bonfires,’ the council wrote on Twitter (X). ‘Report any materials you see [on] 01 222 2222.’

Last year, 244 fire calls and 385 emergency medical calls were made over 24 hours last Halloween — 190 of which were bonfire related.

Incidents included fires being lit on football pitches, paths and smoke going into nearby houses.

Amongst the most dangerous incidents was a report of gas cylinders being placed on a fire in the Liberties area, while the DFB were called out to deal with a car that had been set alight in Tallaght that was blocking the entrance to a housing estate.

Other incidents included aerosol cans being thrown on a bonfire in Drimnagh and sparks coming close to a house in Tallaght.
