Dublin GAA has announced an additional referee course early this year in a bid to tackle the “chronic shortage” of referees at adult football and hurling level.
A statement from the Dublin GAA County board said resources for referees in the capital are currently “stretched to the limit” and they are appealing for clubs to identify candidates who may be able to referee.
It is appealing for suitable candidates to put their names forward as to “ensure the effective running of our men’s adult games at both football and hurling, we need match officials”.
The course, from Coiste na Réiteoirí, will take place in late January/early February with more specific dates yet to be confirmed.
It describes refereeing as a great way to “stay involved in the game as an alternative to playing”, “keep fit” and “helps to develop personal skills which are invaluable in all walks of life”.
To apply for the course to become a registered referee, candidates must be over 18 and be available to referee adult football and/or hurling.
Participants applying should also be physically and mentally fit, be open to constructive feedback and are willing to learn, have the ability to remain calm under pressure and have a good knowledge of the playing rules.
There are a growing number of gaelic games every year, with up to 130 games scheduled to take place every weekend.
Dublin currently has roughly 180 referees for adult men’s level to cater for nearly the same number of games per weekend.
Match fees for officials are currently at €40 for club games.
However, a group of referees in Dublin have previously requested a 25pc increase in match fees from the current rate of €40 to €50.
The group, going under the name Gaelic Referees Union, called for the initiation of a centralised and transparent appointment system and a new referee’s feedback portal.
