Dublin was ranked after London, in first place, and Paris, in second, for the most congested cities and was 15th in the congestion worldwide ranking.

The global rankings, which assessed over 900 cities and 36 different cities and found that America, Germany and the UK saw traffic congestion grow in 2023 and reach pre-Covid levels.

However, London’s 2pc increase was lower than cities in the global top 25 congested cities, suggesting that the UK capital rebounded from the effects of Covid sooner and other cities are catching up, Inrix said.

The data was released by transport analytics company Inrix, a US business that specialises in mobility analytics and connected car services.

The ranking is based on the length of delays, weighted by the size of each city’s population.

The report breaks down the number of hours lost due to congestion or being stuck in traffic. It found drivers in Dublin lost 81 hours in congestion, which is up 13pc from 2023.

In Galway, road users lost 67 hours due to congestion, down 8pc from 2023.

London was ranked the most congested city in Europe, with drivers spending 101 hours sitting in traffic in 2024, a 2pc increase from 2023.

Inrix said London contained most of the worst corridors for traffic delays in the UK because of the “concentration of population, employment and economic activity”.

Paris came second (97 hours), followed by Dublin (81), Rome (71), Brussels (74), Warsaw (70), Milan (64), Rotterdam (63), Prague (64) and Berlin (58).

The global top ten was Istanbul (105), New York City (102), Chicago (102), Mexico City (97), London (101), Paris (97), Jakarta (89), Los Angeles (88), Cape Town (94) and Brisbane (84).

The Inrix annual Global Traffic Scoreboard is calculated by examining the length of time it takes to get to and from major employment centres within urban areas and the time it takes to get to commuting neighbourhoods.
