‘A part of the city that’s come to perfectly represent Dublin’s unique old-school charm mixed with a very modern energy,’ the global city guide brand says
The neighbourhood joins other Dublin areas such as Stoneybatter and Phibsborough as some of the coolest in the country, according to the magazine.
Inchicore ranks in 25th place and is listed alongside cities such as Strathbungo in Glasgow, Scotland, and Northbridge in Perth, Australia.
Time Out features 38 neighbourhoods around the world, curated by its global network of local city editors and experts.
According to the magazine, Inchicore “was just a suburb that you passed through on your way in or out of the city centre.”
“The unexpected trendiness that’s descended on the likes of Smithfield and Stoneybatter has found its way to Inchicore,” they added.
Recommendations in the area include Riggers Coffee, Richmond Barracks, and Tacos Lupillo.
Some of the old-school pubs that were mentioned included Cleary’s and The Glen alongside trendy spots such as the Stillwater Gin Distillery.
Rascals Brewing is also mentioned which regularly hosts events such as seasonal movie nights, outdoor barbecues, and Rocktoberfest, providing opportunities for fun and connection within the community.
The area, straddling Dublin 8 and extending into Dublin 10 and 12, has industrial roots and grew as a neighbourhood around Richmond Barracks, a significant site during Ireland’s struggle for independence, and the Inchicore Railway Works, which remains a key employer nearly 180 years after its establishment.
Today, it boasts a vibrant community rich in working-class history, blending local pubs with authentic eateries and charming parks.
The area’s heritage is visible in landmarks like the Grotto of Lourdes and Goldenbridge Cemetery, the first dedicated Catholic cemetery in Ireland.
Inchicore is also home to various cultural and sporting activities, notably St. Patrick’s Athletic football club.
Local initiatives such as Frontline Bikes and FoodCloud enrich the community, while several independent coffee shops and eateries have emerged, adding to its charm.
Though Inchicore has evolved over the years, it maintains a sense of community and identity, celebrated through its history, culture, and the enduring spirit of its residents.
The coolest neighbourhood in the entire world, according to Time Out magazine, is Notre-Dame-du-Mont in Marseille, France, which is described as a “former artists’ district of colourful cul-de-sacs, graffiti-covered alleyways, and streets lined with plane trees and twisting staircases”.
The magazine describes it as a “small, laidback enclave that packs in a remarkable concentration of galleries, lively restaurants, chic and community-minded shops, and new spots hidden behind pizza trucks”.
Coming in second place was Mers Sultan in Casablanca, Morocco, described as a concrete jungle of narrow streets where art deco, art nouveau, and modernist buildings meet.
Third place was Pererenan in Bali, Indonesia, noted for its “pristine beaches, cosy cafés, unique shops, and relaxed vibe, free from noise and traffic”.
