A primary school in Co Dublin has been evacuated following reports of ”a major gas leak” in the Lucan area this morning.

Children and staff from Scoil Áine Naofa and St Thomas’ JNS in Lucan were taken out of the building safely.

Gas Networks Ireland said it “responded immediately to a report of third-party damage to a gas pipeline in Lucan”.

In a statement, it said staff arrived on the site at 9:28am and the situation was made safe 30 minutes later at 9:58am.

Dublin City Council said Dublin Fire Brigade and gardaí also attended the scene near Esker Drive in Lucan.

In a statement, the council confirmed that Dublin Fire Brigade received a call about the incident at 9.30am and as a precaution a number of buildings were evacuated.

One fire engine remains at the scene to support scene safety and council officials said firefighters will continue to assist the other agencies in attendance.

In a message to parents, shared by local councillor Vicki Casserly, the school urged parents to collect their children immediately from the main entrance.

”Coats and schoolbags to be collected tomorrow,” school authorities said in the message.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Cllr Casserly praised the school and emergency services for the fast and safe evacuation of all pupils and staff.

Dublin Fire Brigade said: ”Traffic restrictions in place, avoid if possible. One fire engine remains on scene.”
