DUBLIN is set for a further bout of chilly weather over the coming days as a Status Orange warning kicks in before temperatures plunge to -7C tonight.
The Status Orange low temperature and ice weather warning comes into place tonight for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht from 6pm.
Today’s temperatures in Dublin are set to stay freezing at 0C after they dropped as low as -5.7C in parts of the county last night.
After dangerously low temperatures last night, concerns had been raised over the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition taking place in the RDS over the coming days.
There were fears that not all 225 schools set to attend event would be able to travel to the competition due to the cold snap, with organisers making necessary exceptions to accommodate pupils.
Head of the exhibition Mari Cahalane told RTE News: “Normally we ask for all of the students to be booked in by 12pm on the Wednesday, just before the opening ceremony.
“So, we’ve given them until 3pm on Wednesday, so they can travel later.”
And in latest updates from event organisers it appears all schools are on track to make the competition after local communities rallied together to clear roads.
Ms Cahalane said: “We’ve heard of a school that had tractors out ploughing the roads to make sure the students would be here.
“It’s a lovely thing that communities are getting behind this because the students have put so much work in to be here.”
Conditions in Dublin will remain dry and sunny throughout today although frost, ice and freezing fog will linger in some places across the county.
And as conditions worsen city and county councils are moving to treat roads across Dublin.
Posting on social media South Dublin County Council urged locals to make themselves aware of local salt bin locations and gritting routes.
The council, who have seven gritting trucks and seven snow ploughs, revealed the information is available on their website.
Temperatures tonight are expected to hit between -2C and -5C as that Status Orange warning kicks in, with Met Eireann warning of “severe frost, ice or black ice and patches of freezing fog”.
It will be mainly a cold and dry night although some showers are expected in parts of the north and west.
And not much in the way of improvements for the capital on Thursday with temperatures still in that 0C to 4C range.
GET READY FOR SNOW
And come Thursday night snow could fall over Dublin as temperatures plummet to a shocking -7C.
Parts of Dublin’s border with Wicklow have already been hit by the white stuff and other parts of the county could be set to follow.
Cloud will move over the country from the southwest overnight bringing with it a band of rain, sleet and snow.
This snowfall is expected mainly over Munster and parts of Leinster meaning Dublin could be under a blanket of white come Friday.
That snow, rain and sleet will continue to move across the country, fading to just rain and sleet.
And overall come Friday temperatures set to turn milder with temperatures of 1C to 5C and just 0C overnight.
