The 21-year-old Irish woman who died while rock climbing in Spain at the weekend has been named locally as Eve McCarthy from Shankill in Dublin.

She was a final year student of physiology at University College Dublin and was a past pupil of Loreto Abbey school in Dalkey.

Ms McCarthy was with a male friend near the village of El Chorro close to the Caminito del Rey pathway when she fell on Friday evening.

Her body was recovered by emergency services after the alarm was raised.

Ms McCarthy’s friend also fell but survived by grabbing onto a bush-covered rock.

The spot they were in is called the Swiss Sector next to a hiking area called the Arabic Staircase.

The two mountaineers are understood to have suffered their accident as they made their descent after taking the wrong route by mistake.
