The theatre, on Parnell Street, was originally a cinema until 1999, before it became a concert venue until 2008, hosting artists such as Amy Winehouse, Megadeth, and David Gray.

Since then, it has hosted various events and exhibitions, but the doors have remained permanently closed since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.

However, it is now reopening to the public from October 10, restored to its full concert and gig venue potential.

Earlier this year, Dublin City Council (DCC) rejected plans by the operators of the theatre to erect steel railings to protect the historic building.

The operators had applied to install railings to safeguard the building, which they claimed was being damaged by vandalism, blood, urine, vomit and “human excrement”.

The council said the proposed new railings, which would be nearly 2 metres in height and enclose the front of the site, would “severely negatively impact” its special character and appearance.

In a statement, DCC added that the railings would set an “undesirable precedent for similar development in the O’Connell Street Architectural Conservation Area”.

During the summer, planning permission was also refused by An Bord Pleanála for a rebranding of the Ambassador Theatre, which is operated by Denis Desmond and Caroline Downey Desmond.

The operators proposed the installation of large digital signage above the main entrance doors and two other digital sideboards.

However, in June, it was ruled that these additions would have an “adverse and injurious visual impact” on the dignity, architectural character, and setting of this nationally significant Protected Structure.

Some of the upcoming comedy and music shows scheduled for the Ambassador Theatre include Belfast comedian Paddy McDonnell and American musician Evan Dando, frontman of the rock band the Lemonheads.

Dublin comedian Willa White is also set to perform there in December, while Roddy Collins will host a talk with Paul Howard at the end of November.

Dubliner Rachel Galvin will bring her one-woman show, which she recently took to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, to the Ambassador Theatre.

The show, titled Rachel Galvo – The Shite Feminist, will be part of the venue’s upcoming programme.
