The annual commemoration of the Battle of the Somme has taken place at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge, Dublin.
The commemoration is a shared-island event that pays tribute to the estimated 60,000 Irish men and women from across the island who served and died during the Battle of the Somme and the two World Wars.
The event, organised by the Royal British Legion in Ireland with the assistance of the State, began with a wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the contributions of those who fought in the conflicts.
The Royal British Legion in Ireland said the ceremony “recognises the contributions and losses from all regions and traditions of Ireland”.
Among those attending were Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs Seán Fleming, Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan, Lord Mayor of Belfast Micky Murray and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Lilian Seenoi-Barr.
Live coverage of the National Day of Commemoration from the Royal Hospital Kilmainham will be broadcast on RTÉ One television and the RTÉ Player from 11am tomorrow morning.
