Former Roscommon goalkeeper Shane Curran will be appointed the new Carlow football manager.

Curran, an All-Ireland club-winning goalkeeper with St Brigid’s in 2013, has been recommended for the position for approval at the next county board meeting.

Curran replaces Niall Carew, who stepped down earlier in the summer after five years in charge.

This is Curran’s first inter-county management position, but he has extensive experience with years managing clubs in Roscommon, Offaly and Westmeath.

A successful businessman, he was behind the innovation that led to the kicking tees used in the game these days.

Carlow GAA chairman Jim Bolger expressed the hope that Curran’s “unwavering energy and enthusiasm” would drive the county forward in 2025.

A statement from Carlow outlining the announcement did not reference a timeframe, except to say that Curran, whose inter-county career spanned 16 years from 1989 to 2005, would be in charge of the team for next year.
