A young man has been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with a shooting in the capital.

Bobby Griffin (21), of Eugene Street in Dublin 8, was brought before a sitting of Dublin District Court this morning.

He was arrested following an investigation into the alleged discharge of a firearm in the south-inner city last year.

Garda Colm Carroll, of Pearse Street Garda station, gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the presiding judge that he met Mr Griffin at the Criminal Courts of Justice on Parkgate Street this morning and charged him with two offences.

Garda Carroll said the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.

Mr Griffin is accused of recklessly discharging a firearm at the Mercer House flat complex in Dublin 2 on November 23, 2023.

The offence is contrary to Section 8 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

He also faces a second charge of possession of a firearm at the same location on the same date, contrary to Section 25 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006.

The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that the matter should be sent forward for trial on indictment at the Circuit Criminal Court.

The prosecuting garda also informed Judge Paula Murphy that he would be objecting to bail.

However, defence solicitor Niall O’Connor said that they would not be making an application for bail at this stage.

An application for legal aid was also granted.

Judge Murphy remanded the accused in custody to appear before Cloverhill district court next week.

The judge said that the book of evidence could be served on that date but acknowledged that it may not be finalised yet.

Mr Griffin will appear in court again via video link on September 12.
