A father and son are among the eight defendants accused of attacking a woman found “in a bloodied, tortured and beaten state” in a flat in Dublin last week.
Dublin District Court has heard that a “makeshift blowtorch”, heated hammerheads, iron bars, and a stick were used to injure and beat her around her head and body after she was brought to a north inner city flat last Thursday.
Seven men and a teenage boy have been charged with false imprisonment and assault causing harm to the woman, 37, at Henrietta House, Dublin 7. The men were remanded in custody following court appearances on Saturday and Monday.
Two of them, Mark Keogh, 33, and Mark McMahon, 54, both from Henrietta House, Dublin 7, appeared separately and via video link before Judge John Brennan at Cloverhill District Court on Wednesday.
Judge Brennan heard that gardaí needed more time to obtain directions from the DPP. Mr Keogh’s case came up first, and defence solicitor Matthew de Courcy said the defendant had reserved his position on bail.
“Yes, we will wait until next time,” said Mr Keogh.
When his father Mr McMahon was called, the solicitor told him his son’s case was put back for two weeks, and he also consented to an adjournment until October 16.
Gardaí are to get 48 hours’ notice of a bail application.
Emmet Black, 48, a father with an address at the Maltings, Dublin 8, was refused bail on Monday. During Mr Black’s court hearing, Garda Ciaran Rogers said the violence only stopped when gardaí entered the flat and the woman, who is a mother, was “in a bloodied, tortured and beaten state”.
The garda said the woman suffered a fractured elbow and cheekbone and needed surgery and five staples to a large laceration to her head.
A 16-year-old boy who cannot be identified as a minor and is charged with the same offences was granted bail with strict conditions in the Children’s Court earlier this week.
The other four co-defendants are: Sean Conroy, 20, who resides at Silloge Road, Ballymun, Dublin 11; Kian Walsh, 21, with an address at Constitution Hill, Dublin 7; Jayven Talbot, 20, of Constitution Hill, Dublin 7; Braxton Rice, 20, from Henrietta House, Dublin 1.
