Gardaí investigating woman’s death seek info on car

Gardaí investigating the death of a woman in her 50s in Co Roscommon have issued an appeal for information regarding the movements of a car between 11am and midday on Saturday.

The silver 08-G registered Peugeot 207 is understood to have travelled from Beechville estate in Athlone onto the N6 westbound from junction 11 to junction 13 before continuing on the R362 from Monksland to Bealnamulla.

Motorists who travelled along these routes within this timeframe are asked to provide gardaí with dash-cam footage.

It comes as gardaí continue to carry out a search of a house in Athlone as part of an investigation to try and establish how and where a mother whose body was found in a field in Co Roscommon died.

Two cars have been seized with DNA and forensic testing under way.

A house in Athlone has been cordoned off following the discovery of the body of a woman in her 50s in a field in Co Roscommon yesterday.

Gardaí are trying to establish if the woman may have suffered a violent death.

The woman’s body has has been removed from the scene to University Hospital in Galway, where a post-mortem examination is being carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist.

An incident room has been set up at Athlone Garda Station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, which now has all the resources of a serious criminal investigation.

They are focused on the post-mortem results along with forensic and DNA tests from the house and the two cars seized.

Flowers were placed at the scene where the woman’s body was found on lands at Curraghaleen, close to the border with Co Westmeath.

Gardaí had been carrying out extensive enquiries over the last few days as part of a missing person appeal.

Mirjana Pap was reported missing in the early hours of last Saturday morning and gardaí and her family expressed serious concerns for her well-being.

The appeal was stood down yesterday following the discovery of the body.

A Croatian national, Ms Pap had been living in the Athlone area for several years.

It is understood she had a number of grown-up children.

She was well-known and worked locally.

One woman who said she knew Ms Pap and who did not want to be named, said Ms Pap’s family were her number one drive in life.

She loved them and everything in life was with them in mind, the woman added.

A GoFundMe page set up by Ms Pap’s friends to support the family with funeral costs has raised over €16,000 with over 300 contributors.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to provide support to the woman’s family.
