Fine Gael will bow to pressure from Fianna Fail in a coalition U-turn that will lead to the announcement of winter energy credits of €150 or more for every household in next month’s budget.

After the energy regulator revealed last week that household bills would rise by €100 from October, Fianna Fail is now arguing all households in the country will need support to pay their electricity bills this winter.

Jack Chambers, the finance minister, told The Sunday Times: “Further energy credits absolutely merit consideration as families continue to struggle with cost of living challenges and energy credits have been an effective measure in supporting households in previous years.”
