The Hollymount U-15 team that captured the Kilmacud Sevens All Ireland Plate title in Dublin were given a rousing welcome on their return to the village. Fireworks lit up the night sky and a bonfire blazed as the cavalcade was greeted by cheering supporters.

This was the nineteenth year of the competition hosted by Kilmacud Crokes GAA on the eve of the All Ireland Final. Hollymount are only the third Mayo team to win either the Cup or Plate in the almost two decades of this competition.

The Mayo girls defeated Rathcline from Longford in the quarter-final before overcoming Kilmacud’s first team in a closely contested semi-final. They met Cappawhite from Tipperary in the final where they emerged comfortable winners.

The cup was presented to Sienna Campbell who was captain on the day. LGFA President, Michael Naughton, a native of Castleconnor, Sligo, was in attendance in Kilmacud for the various games during the afternoon.

The members of the management were John Stagg, Tony Corcoran, Sinéad Stagg, Lynda Hession and Margaret Walsh. The underage teams at the club are enjoying a phenomenal season winning the Mayo Féile honours as well as the U-16 Division 1 league title.

“We were not expecting such a turnout on our return home,” said Sinéad Stagg. “It was a great surprise for the girls and it meant a lot to them. Even Seán (Stagg) and his dog Millie were there for the celebrations!

“They are a great group and they love their football. We expect many of them will wear the county jerseys in the times ahead. On behalf of all of us, I want to thank everyone associated with the homecoming party. It was a special night in Hollymount.”
