Several hundred people have gathered in front of the GPO on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for a rally against racism and the far right.

The rally has been organised by the Le Cheile/Ireland for All group and the Congress of Trade Unions.

Trade Union activists with banners from the FORSA, SIPTU, INTO, INMO and NASUWT gathered to hear speeches.

SIPTU General Secretary Joe Cunningham said that the rally was organised to mark the first anniversary of the Dublin riots.

Mr Cunningham said that the purpose of the rally was to show this “is not what we’re about” and to highlight the workers of all backgrounds who acted on the night to contain the riot and the damage done.

Owen Reidy, ICTU Secretary General told RTÉ News the rally was organised before the election was called and trade unions across Europe have taken a leading role in opposing the far right.

Mr Reidy said while the far right remains small in Ireland it must be opposed.
