The new roles are in the areas of research and design and digital sales. Red Hat’s Waterford base is at Communications House, Cork Road, Waterford city.

“The announcement is a further boost of confidence in Waterford’s growing tech cluster which continues to grow and expand. These are high quality and high paying jobs which will benefit the local economy significantly,” said Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins.

“I understand a significant number of the 800 roles announced by IBM will be located at the company’s subsidiary Red Hat which is located on the Cork Road in Waterford City. The Red Hat story is a truly remarkable one, its location in Waterford stems from the acquisition of Waterford startup FeedHenry and coincides with the company’s ten year anniversary celebrations which take place tomorrow,

“IDA jobs growth continues at a pace in Waterford. We have now seen the live register in Waterford drop by over 60pc since 2011 and that is due in no small part to the 73pc increase in IDA supported employment which has gone from 5248 to 9,078 last year.

“I look forward to continuing to work with my Fine Gael colleague Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment Peter Burke to create the right conditions for further growth and investment in Waterford,” added Senator Cummins.
