DUBLIN’S GPO could soon be used as a world-class museum or the new home of RTE following new recommendations from a taskforce to clean up the Capital.
In one of his moves as Taoiseach, Simon Harris put together a taskforce to look at how to improve Dublin City centre across a range of areas including crime, vacancy and tourism.
The taskforce – which was chaired by An Post CEO David McRedmond – has compiled a report with 10 major initiatives to revive the city.
The Taoiseach will bring this report to Cabinet on Tuesday before it is published in full.
The report makes a series of recommendations to improve O’Connell Street as the main thoroughfare in the capital.
This includes redeveloping the GPO, formally home to An Post, and bringing it back into use as soon as possible.
The taskforce looked at a series of proposals for the new use of the GPO including a new museum, housing a Government department or becoming the new home of RTE.
The cash strapped national broadcaster is already sold off part of its Donnybrook site for €107 million and is looking at selling off more land to boost its coffers.
While the report does not make a final determination on what should be done with the GPO, it does suggest that a decision should be made be the end of quarter one next year.
The report also recommends a “step change” in how the area is redeveloped with a special programme advised.
The report also looks at housing in the city centre, waste, policing and culture.
The Government is expected to establish an interdepartmental group to examine the recommendation
