Enniscorthy’s passion for cricket reached fever pitch recently as the very first Cricket Tournament by Enniscorthy Arts and Sports Club (ESSAC) took place at the Greyhound Stadium.

Attending the event were Cathaoirleach Aidan Browne along with councillor Paddy Kavanagh, with Cllr Browne kicking off the proceedings with a pull shot.

Enniscorthy Stars A & B, Waterford Vikings A & B, Waterford Tigers, Carlow Super kings, Newport Tuskers (Limerick) and Wexford Hunters took part in the tournament. With eight teams competing, the event delivered a series of nail-biting matches, spectacular individual performances, and unforgettable moments, much to the delight of cricket enthusiasts.

Highlights of the tournament included an outstanding semi-final, following by a grand finale between Waterford Tigers and Carlow Super kings. Batting first, the Tigers posted a competitive total of 99 runs, thanks to a solid 56-run innings by their star batsman, Regis. The Super kings, determined to clinch the title, started their chase aggressively. However in the end it was the Waterford Tigers who claimed victory.

The award presentations to the winner and runner-up were a grand affair, presented by Cllr Browne and sponsored generously by Spice Emporium Asian Supermarket, Enniscorthy and Copper Chimney, Asian Restaurant, Wexford.

The tournament also saw the emergence of several young talent. Regis from Waterford Tigers, who was instrumental throughout the tournament, was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding all-round performance. Stijo from the Carlow Super kings, one of the few players, impressed everyone with his exceptional bowling, earning the Best Bowler award. The Best Batsman award went to Regis for his consistent high scores.

Jins Joseph, Secretary of Enniscorthy Stars Sports and Arts club (ESSAC), said the support shown at this event has assured them that cricket will have a bright future within the town.

“Enniscorthy Cricket Tournament has once again demonstrated the unifying power of sport. Organisers have already started planning for next year’s event, promising even more teams and excitement. Cricket lovers can hardly wait to see what the future holds,” he said.
