A cut to inheritance tax for the first time in more than five years is set to feature in the coalition’s last budget before the general election.
Fine Gael wants an increase in the tax-free threshold for gifts or inheritances given by a parent to their child — the first since 2019 — to be included in Simon Harris’s first budget since becoming taoiseach.
The measure would aim to address the increase in property prices and inflation which has meant middle-income families are being hit with tax bills when they inherit property including farms.
