Mountjoy Prison

The Irish Prison Service is investigating following the death of an inmate in Mountjoy Prison.

The Sunday World understands the man was discovered deceased in his cell following unlock at 8am this morning.

The man, aged in his 20s and from north Dublin, was serving a two year sentence for drug related offences.

Sources indicated foul play is not suspected at this time and toxicology tests and a post mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation.

The deceased had been incarcerated since last year and was due for release late this year.

In a statement, the Irish Prison Service confirmed: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death of a person in custody in Mountjoy Prison on 18th July 2024 and the next of kin have been notified.

“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. “The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office.”
