Ireland is set to construct a new home for cricket. The Irish government has approved building a permanent international cricket stadium and a high-performance center on Dublin’s national sports campus. The project’s main goal is to prepare Ireland, along with Scotland and England, to host the 2030 T20 World Cup.

The project is planned to be finished in multiple stages. Cricket Ireland officially decided to build an 8,000-seat stadium with the option to expand to 20,000 seats for large events. Phase 1 of the project is anticipated to be finished by 2028 and will include the construction of a main cricket oval. Also, there are 4,000 permanent seats, space for large temporary seating, a high-performance center, and ancillary facilities like a cutting-edge players/officials pavilion.

Boosting Ireland Cricket

For many years, the Irish Republic has struggled to find a dedicated cricket facility; as a result, they frequently had to play their “home” matches in other countries. The lack of a permanent home venue reminded Ireland of this difficulty earlier this year when they were forced to postpone their first-ever men’s series against Australia.

Currently, Irish uses four ODI-rated grounds, mainly club cricket grounds with temporary seating: Clontarf, Stormont, Bready, and Malahide. But now, this home ground would allow the Irish to use this brand-new, cutting-edge venue to host significant international cricket tournaments. Additionally, it will greatly help achieve Cricket Ireland’s goals of expanding the game and directing funding toward the sport’s grassroots.

Irish Government Support

The CEO of Cricket Ireland, Warren Deutrom, stated that these facilities will contribute to the sport’s growth. “Today’s announcement is fantastic,” It is a huge tribute to everybody involved at all levels in Irish cricket who have got us to the stage whereby the government genuinely regards us as a sport of national significance worthy of major investment,” Warren Deutrom, the CEO of Cricket Irish Republic, said.

“It’s also going to increase the number of pitches we can use, helping us ensure we host more cricket in Ireland. Whether men’s, women’s, seniors, juniors, nationally or provincially, this new facility will help keep our product, our sport, on our shores,” he added. Minister of State Thomas Byrne and Minister of Sport Catherine Martin are expected to make a formal announcement to explain their objectives. However, future projects include a high-performance center, media, and indoor school facilities.

The new stadium will help resolve various logistical challenges by providing a high-quality, dedicated location for international matches.  The construction of new grass fields is a critical component of the project since it ensures that Ireland’s facilities are of the best quality by the time the 2030 World Cup arrives. Yet, these pitches require several years to settle before hosting big international championships.
