The last three winners of the Irish Champion Stakes were members of the Classic generation trained by Aidan O’Brien – and Los Angeles is the latest Ballydoyle beast bidding to join the club.
Connections opted to head to Leopardstown instead of the St Leger at Doncaster after the Irish Derby winner ground out a victory in the Great Voltigeur last time out, although the ultimate aim could be the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe next month.
If Los Angeles is to become the latest three-year-old scorer for the Ballydoyle maestro then he will need to beat classy colt Economics, consistent Ghostwriter plus older stablemates Auguste Rodin and Luxembourg, who won the 2023 and 2022 renewals respectively.
Irish Champion Stakes odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key historical trends from the last 10 renewals and a tip based off the big-race stats are below.
Irish Champion Stakes 2024 trends
CAREER WINS
- 10/10 had at least three wins on the board
Shin Emperor can be ignored as the Japanese raider has only been first past the post twice.
CAREER RUNS
- 10/10 had run five times or more in their career
Economics is a shock departure as the antepost favourite has only raced four times under rules.
RATING
- 10/10 were rated 117 or higher
Hans Andersen (100) and Royal Rhyme (113) are the next two to be scratched from calculations.
SEASON FORM
- 9/10 had at least two wins that season
The field is slashed to one because Auguste Rodin, Ghostwriter and Luxembourg have failed to get on the scoreboard on two occasions in 2024.
Irish Champion Stakes 2024 trends verdict
Despite taking a drop in trip, LOS ANGELES – the Ballydoyle second string with Dylan Browne McMonagle in the saddle – emerges as the trends pick in his bid to become Aidan O’Brien’s latest three-year-old winner in what looks like a cracking renewal of the Irish Champion Stakes.
