Leona Maguire is being well backed to land a lucrative victory this week as BoyleSports cut her into 35/1 from 40/1 to win the first major of the women’s golf season.
The Chevron Championship offers the first of five opportunities for the Cavan woman to break her major championship duck this season and she tees it up in Texas off the back of some promising form on the LPGA Tour on her most recent outing.
Maguire topped the strokeplay standings and went all the way to the final of the T-Mobile Match Play event in Las Vegas earlier this month, only to run into World Number 1 Nelly Korda in the decider.
Two-time tour winner Maguire went down to a 4&3 defeat to the in-form American in the final as Korda bagged a sensational fourth consecutive victory, the first woman to do so on Tour since Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa in 2018. Korda is 5/1 favourite to make it five-in-a-row by landing the season’s opening major, while you have to go down to 25/1 to find her nearest challengers in the betting, including defending champion Lilia Vu.
Stephanie Meadow completes the Irish representation in the field, and the Jordanstown native, who finished third at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last year, can be backed at an extremely attractive price of 150/1.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Nelly Korda is firing on all cylinders and will take some stopping on current form, but Leona Maguire has given the Irish some optimism and they’re rallying behind a major effort this week.”
