An Irish man has been arrested in Peru after 55kg of cocaine was seized by police.

He was one of three men detained by police in Lima after they had been under surveillance by detectives from Peru’s anti-drugs unit, known as Dirandro.

Police stopped a rented Nissan and discovered suitcases containing the cocaine.

The 40-year-old Irish man was arrested along with a British and a Bulgarian citizen.

They had been put under surveillance after entering Peru separately on 21 July and being filmed greeting each other at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport.

The men are believed to have rented an apartment in the eastern Lima district of La Molina and rented the Nissan car.

Police believe they intended to smuggle the drugs into the UK.

The men have appeared in court and were remanded in custody.
