After a disappointing first round, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow have left themselves with a mountain to climb in the final three rounds of the female individual golf stroke play at Le Golf National in Paris.

After ending on a sweet note yesterday with Kellie Harrington, it was the turn of another two Irish women to keep spirits high, namely Stephanie Meadow from Jordanstown and Leona Maguire from Cavan.

However, Meadow was off to a shaky start, scoring five bogeys on the front nine and finishing with an overall score of six over par to land the Ulster golfer in joint 50th place on 78 strokes.

Maguire will be eager to forget her first-round performance, scoring two bogeys, one double bogey and one triple bogey, leaving her with a score on the front nine of 43.

The Cavan woman salvaged what she could in the back nine, scoring two birdies and two bogeys to go into the 18th hole just needing to get the hole over and done with.

However, she finished on a birdie to bring her level with her fellow Irishwoman Stephanie Meadow in 50th with a score of 78.

Sailing

Australian-born, Carlow-based Finn Lynch finished eighth in the men’s dinghy medal race after it was postponed yesterday due to low wind speeds.

Lynch finished 41 seconds behind gold medallist Matt Whearn and just over half a minute away from a podium spot, with Pavlos Kontides and Jonathan Vadnai taking silver and bronze respectively.
