ITTN’S Sharon Jordan attended a tasting workshop in Teeling Whiskey Distillery, in Dublin’s Liberties last night, with Visit New Hampshire, which was led by the energetic Governor of New Hampshire, Mr. Chris Sununu.
Mr Sununu is leading a trade mission in Ireland and was keen to meet with travel journalists to highlight all that is on offer in the State.
Highlighting a range of experiences the Granite State has to offer visitors – including epic outdoors, sophisticated culture and awesome culinary attractions – it was an informal evening of whiskey tasting, cocktail making and we got to taste local specialties of lobster roll, clam chowder with puff pastry, turkey with mushroom and tarragon sauce and of course salted caramel donuts to finish off.
Here’s what we learnt about New Hampshire:
It’s got 4 very distinct seasons – our favourite of which would have to be autumn or fall; it’s that small-town charm, visions of pumpkins out on stoops and the colours that remind us of gorgeous hallmark movies that only New England can deliver.
The Governor explained that one of New Hampshire’s most striking features is its diverse geography. The White Mountains, home to the highest peaks in the northeastern USA, offer breathtaking views and endless outdoor activities. Visitors can hike the famous Mount Washington, known for its stunning vistas and unpredictable weather, or explore the scenic Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile stretch of road that showcases the region’s fall foliage in vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow.
In the summer months the group were told that the mountains become a haven for hikers, mountain bikers, and those looking to escape into nature. Lakes such as Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake provide opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming, making them family friendly resorts.
New Hampshire is dotted with charming towns like Portsmouth, with its historic waterfront and cobblestone streets, offers a blend of culture, shopping, and dining. The Strawbery Banke Museum, a living history museum, showcases the area’s history through restored homes and costumed interpreters.
Further inland, the town of Hanover is home to Dartmouth College, one of the Ivy League schools. The campus, with its stunning architecture and vibrant arts scene, is worth a visit. Nearby, the quaint village of Woodstock welcomes visitors with its covered bridges and access to the Pemigewasset River for tubing and kayaking.
But it’s New Hampshire’s culinary scene that is leading the tourism boom in the area. From farm-to-table restaurants to cozy diners, the State offers a variety of dining experiences and a quick search on Google confirms this. Don’t miss trying local specialties like apple cider donuts, fresh seafood, and the famous New Hampshire maple syrup of which the Governor stated is the best he’s ever tried – although he may be biased! The State’s craft breweries are also a highlight, with many offering tours and tastings.
New Hampshire is a year-round destination, with each season offering unique activities. In winter, the State transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing – a place which the Governor stated that he used to see plenty of Irish school kids come on trips over the years – and he could never figure out how we didn’t ski – until he figured out we don’t get snow, nor have we high mountains!
Resorts like Loon Mountain and Bretton Woods provide excellent slopes for both beginners and experienced skiers and snowboarders.
As spring arrives, its a perfect time for the hikers and exploring the numerous State parks.
Thanks for an informative night. I now know all there is to know about Teeling Whiskey and New Hampshire. This has definitely risen on the bucket list. Fly to New Hampshire via Boston and take the 30 minute drive to experience it all.
