Thomas Davis ladies secured the
division 8 cup after beating Geraldine Plunkett Morans on Sunday
Thomas Davis ladies football team secured the 2024 Division 8 Cup after beating Geraldine Plunkett Morans 2 14 to 1-06 in Cornelscourt on Sunday.
However, it was a much closer contest than the scoreline suggests.
The early stages of the game saw both defences called into action, with the two finalists boasting strong half forward lines.
Morans kicked some fine scores in the first half, and Davis’s half back line of Leah Farrell, Abbey Ferns and Natasha O’Neil worked tirelessly to prevent a scoring onslaught from their opponents.
Two points from the boot of centre forward Emma Ferns seemed to settle the Davis attack, and through several bursting runs from Hollie Byrne up the field they added to their tally through points from Nicola Staunton and Karla Plowman.
Davis finished the half strongly and a fortuitous Nicole Scott goal after a period of intense pressure put the Tallaght side 1-8 to 1-5 up at the break.
Thomas Davis started the second half well but had to withstand strong pressure from Moran’s, as Alex Giglione, Stacey Byrne and Sara Moody stood tall to sniff out any potential danger.
The game was in the melting pot on 40 minutes with just two points between the sides but the entrance of Georgia Plowman changed the game in Davis’s favour as she started to pick holes in Moran’s defence.
The Tallaght side pulled away in the final quarter showcasing their excellent point taking skills with some brilliant scores from play.
Scott scored her second and the decisive goal in the game as Davis secured the Division eight cup title.
The sides will meet again in the league final on the 25th of September in Kiltipper.
