The Irish passport grants visa-free access to 193 destinations. Photo: Stock image

The Irish passport is the third most powerful in the world. According to the Henley Passport Index, it grants visa-free access to 193 destinations.

Yet, while our passport’s power soars, so too does the number of passports issued. Last year alone, nearly one million passports were dispensed through the Passport Online service. That’s an eye-watering 2,000 to 3,000 a day. Included in this are 36,000 foreign birth registrations (FBR), given to individuals born abroad who claim Irish citizenship through descent.
