The guessing game about when the general election will be called is in full swing. One minute, we’re hearing that the Finance Bill will be delayed until after the midterm break, pushing everything back. The next, some backbench TD is nudging reporters with suggestions that the Taoiseach might fancy a November poll after all.

The question isn’t when the election will be, it’s why should we care when the outcome feels pre-ordained. Irish politics is stuck in a rinse-and-repeat cycle. With Sinn Féin now in apparent free fall, it looks like Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will glide back into power, minus the Greens.
