A MAJOR Dublin based transport scheme will be offering free services to commuters on election day in a bid to get more voters to the polling stations.

As members of the public begin to plan their journeys to make their vote count in just two days, one transport initiative is working to make that easier for people in the capital.

Redclick dublinbikes will be offering free transport on November 29 to “encourage greater voter participation.”

The ‘1 Day Tickets‘ available for the well-known bike-sharing scheme will be free of charge for 30 minutes on election day – with normal charges applying for journeys over 30 minutes.

The free journeys will be available from midnight to 11:59pm on election day.

To access the scheme you must log on to dublinbikes.ie or via the official app and select the ‘promotions’ subscription option on the day.

The offer is labelled ‘Free RedClick Pedal to the Polls’ option and new users will have to register.

All journeys under 30 minutes will be free – with normal charges applying for trips over 30 minutes.

RedClick, formerly known as Liberty Insurance, was announced as the new partner of dublinbikes earlier this month.

Head of Marketing at RedClick Lisa Silver said the company hopes the initiative makes voting a “little easier” for the public.

Silver said: “At RedClick dublinbikes, we are committed to making it easier for people to move around Dublin.

“Offering free day passes on Election Day is our way of supporting the democratic process and helping the Dublin community get to polling stations quickly, sustainably, and without stress.

“We hope this initiative makes it a little easier for voters to make their voices heard.”

While Dublin City Council Transport Head Brendan O’Brien said they are “delighted to partner with RedClick for the initiative.”

O’Brien said: “Ensuring Dubliners can easily access polling stations is a priority for us, and we’re delighted to partner with RedClick in this initiative.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to a more connected, voter-friendly city.”

Last night saw the leaders of the three main parties go head to head in a battle of the issues on RTE.

Sinn Fein‘s Mary Lou McDonald, Fine Gael‘s Simon Harris and Fianna Fail’s Micheal Martin all battled it out to garner support from last minute voters.

While there were many points of disagreement among the leaders, there was never a point of any overly critical tension.

And last night’s final debate on RTE’s Prime Time has left many still undecided when it comes to voting.
