IRISH tourists are being warned ahead of heading to a major Spanish holiday hotspot as protesters storm a popular beach.
Protesters have staged yet another anti-tourism demonstration on one of Majorca’s biggest party beaches.
Campaigners arrived on Platja de Palma and claimed the beach has now turned into a hotspot for drunken tourists.
They are now also warning of more protests and plan to take action in Magaluf.
Despite protesters taking over the beach, it remained peaceful other than some strong words exchanged.
The campaigners are part of the Let’s Occupy Our Beaches movement aiming to reduce the amount of tourism on the island.
The protest was heavily monitored by local police, but thankfully no violence ensued.
Platja de Palma is a popular holiday destination among Irish tourists due to its high temperatures, long sandy beach and endless bars and restaurants.
The protests throughout Majorca and the rest of Spain have been carried out over the last number of months due to overcrowding.
Locals are protesting “inaction” from authorities on housing and the rise in cost for rental accommodations – particularly those rented as short term.
The association said they believed the current tourism model is “doing us a lot of harm”.
They added that they are not against tourism but instead against a “tourism model that impoverishes”.
Pictures showed the demonstrators laying out a banner which read: “Occupy our beaches”.
Others carried signs saying “tourists go home” and raging that Majorca is “not a f***ing theme park”.
The group of around 100 protesters spoke to beachgoers during the demonstration.
And one activist was seen on video loudly playing the bagpipes on the pristine sand.
Majorca recently announced that it is cutting the number of tourist beds by 18,000 as officials said the coexistence of locals and tourists is now “at risk”.
There is now also action being taken on the Balearic islands to limit drunken behaviour by tourists.
Further sit-ins are now planned for the coming weeks as the peak season hits, with Magaluf and Port d’Alcudia said to be hit.
