Today it emerged a second Irish youngster, this time a six-year-old, had been taken to hospital after an incident yesterday afternoon
THE same Majorcan hotel pool has been the scene of a second near-drowning incident involving an Irish youngster in just over 24 hours.
A 14-year-old remained in intensive care late yesterday in the island’s Manacor Hospital after being rescued from the water and revived at the poolside at an all-inclusive hotel called Globales Bouganvilla in Sa Coma around 2pm on Tuesday.
Today it emerged a second Irish youngster, this time a six-year-old, had been taken to hospital after an incident yesterday afternoon around 4.20pm at the same hotel.
A lifeguard is understood to have pulled the child out of the water and revived him before emergency responders took over in a repeat of Tuesday’s drama, although the youngster was already conscious when they arrived and his condition is not thought to be as serious as the teenager’s.
Like the older boy, the six-year-old, who was also on holiday with his family, was taken to Manacor Hospital in the east of the island.
Hospital sources confirmed yesterday the teenager, who they clarified was 14 and not 16 as initially reported, remained in intensive care.
The source said: “The outlook for this patient is unclear at the moment. He was admitted to the hospital just after 4.15pm on Tuesday and is still in intensive care.”
He was described as being in a “very serious” condition when he was rushed to hospital.
The hotel has not yet commented on either incident.
In June 2022 a six-year-old boy from north Belfast died following a pool incident while he was on holiday in Majorca.
Corey Aughey was treated in intensive care at a hospital in the island capital Palma for three days before losing his fight for life.
He had also been staying at a hotel in Sa Coma which was not named at the time.
The Aughey family had only touched down in Majorca a few hours before the tragedy struck.
Later the same month an Irish seven-year-old died in hospital after being pulled out of the pool at HYB Eurocalas Hotel in the east coast Majorcan resort of Calas de Mallorca.
