Gardaí are investigating the death of a man in Dublin’s city centre after he collapsed following an apparent scuffle with another person on Lower Baggot Street.

The deceased, who was in his late 60s, became unwell and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A number of gardaí who were in the area had spoken to the man just after the incident took place. However, he appears to have brushed it off as a minor confrontation between friends. Moments after interacting with the gardaí on the street, the man collapsed.

A postmortem was awaited and the results of that examination will decide the direction of the investigation into the death. It was not clear if the man may have sustained an injury that resulted in his death or if he had an underlying health condition.

In reply to queries, Garda Headquarters said gardaí in Pearse Street station were “investigating the circumstances surrounding the death” of the man late on Monday night on Baggot Street Lwr.

“Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly before 11pm following reports of an altercation involving two males,” the reply stated. “One of the individuals became unwell following the incident and was brought to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The Garda added scene had been preserved for forensic and technical examination while the local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist had been notified and a postmortem examination has been arranged.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and for those with camera footage, including motorists with dashcam, from the area at the time to contact them at Pearse Street Garda station.
