A garda spokesperson said: “The single-vehicle collision occurred when a jeep collided with an electricity pole at approximately 11:55pm.”

The man, who was the driver and only occupant of the jeep, was transferred to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time after the collision.

No other injuries were reported.

The East Wall road is currently closed between the North Strand Road and Alfie Byrne Road.

Local diversions have been put in place but motorists have been warned to expect delays.

The route was closed to facilitate a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators this morning.

Gardai have urged anyone who may have any information to come forward to aid in their investigation.

In a statement this morning, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Gardai are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardai.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mountjoy Garda Station on 01 666 8600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
