A man in his 50s has been arrested following a security incident on the Sligo to Dublin train.
Shortly after 6.20pm yesterday evening, Gardaí received reports of a man carrying a suspected firearm on the Sligo train arriving into Connolly Station in Dublin.
The man was not alleged to have made any threats towards any passengers on-board.
Armed Gardaí entered the station in central Dublin during the incident.
The station was evacuated and a security sweep of both the station and the train took place.
The man was arrested at the scene and has been detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Gardai say that the suspected firearm was seized and a full technical examination will be conducted to determine its status under Irish legislation.
Connolly Station was closed during the incident but has since re-opened.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
Gardai also say that they are “aware of commentary in circulation online in relation to this incident which contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news”.
Once again, An Garda Síochána appeal to the public to independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps,”.
A spokesperson for Irish Rail said all services to and from Connolly were suspended during the incident.
