A man has been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a car in Dublin with a baby girl in it.

The incident occurred in Mountjoy Square in Dublin city centre on Monday afternoon.

The girl was in the back of a silver Nissan Qashqai hatchback when it was stolen from Mountjoy Square West about 1.50pm on Monday.

Gardai said they immediately commenced searches in the north inner city and emergency alerts were issued to all officers on patrol.

Members of the public were asked not to approach the vehicle.

Shortly before 4.20pm, the car was recovered from North Richmond Street after being discovered by gardaí on patrol.

The man aged in his 40s was arrested on Monday evening for an offence contrary to the Criminal Law (Jurisdiction) Act, 1976, the Unlawful Seizure of Vehicles.

He is currently being held in a Garda station in north Dublin.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
