An investigation is under way after a man was injured in an attack by an XL Bully dog in north Dublin on Sunday morning.

It happened on Ballyshannon Road in Kilmore at around 11am.

A garda spokesperson said the dog was restrained and later transferred to the custody of a dog warden.

The XL Bully has since been destroyed.

Dublin City Council confirmed that “the Animal Welfare and Control Services Unit were called by An Garda Síochána to assist with dog attack in the Kilmore Area on Sunday”.

A spokesperson said “the dog in question, an XL Bully, was removed by the Wardens Service under the Control of Dogs 1986 Act … and humanely put down”.

Gardaí say that an investigation into the attack is ongoing.

The breed is to banned under regulations to be introduced from next month.

From 1 October, it will be illegal to breed, sell, rehome or import XL Bully dogs.

The second phase will be introduced from 1 February 2025.

This will see a ban on owning an XL Bully dog, unless the owner has a Certificate of Exemption.

The certificates will only be issued to those who can prove their dog has a licence, is microchipped and is neutered.

The Government announced the move earlier this year following calls for tighter dog control measures after a number of high-profile attacks.
