Anthony Hogg (40) and his wife Georgina (39) were struck by a car while crossing a road near Blanchardstown Shopping Centre at around 5.45pm yesterday.
The driver of the car failed to remain at the scene.
Georgina Hogg Moore was pronounced dead at the scene while her husband Anthony was rushed to hospital but passed away overnight.
The couple are understood to be married with children, and were living in the Whitestown area nearby.
Fianna Fáil councillor for Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart and Deputy Mayor for Fingal County Council, John-Kingsley Onwumereh, offered his condolences to the family.
“This is very heart-wrenching,” he told the Irish Independent.
“I’m absolutely devastated that in less than a week or so, we’ve had two major incidents, and obviously, this recent one leading to the death of two residents in Whitestown.
“As a local councillor, I’m absolutely devastated, and it’s absolutely taken a lot away from the festivities of Christmas, especially happening on St Stephen’s Day.
“My heart goes out to the family and to residents who are obviously affected by this ugly incident.”
Tributes have been paid online to the dead couple, with one friend writing: “Heartbreaking rip Georgina, You were a lovely girl look over your family at this really sad time”.
Deputy Ruth Coppinger, People Before Profit-Solidarity TD for Dublin West, also expressed her condolences with the family.
“More carnage on the roads in Dublin 15′, she wrote on X. “Deepest sympathies to the families of the two people killed in Blanchardstown. Let’s hope the person responsible is brought to justice.”
Two other pedestrians were present at the scene at the time but were uninjured.
A garda investigation was launched and an Audi A7 believed to have been involved in the collision was recovered nearby a short time later.
The car has since been seized for forensic examination.
At around 10.30pm last night a man presented himself to Blanchardstown garda station and was arrested.
The man, aged in his mid-40s, is currently being quizzed on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, and can be held for up to 24 hours.
A technical examination of the scene on the Blanchardstown Road North has also been carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardaí at this stage do not believe the victims were targeted intentionally and are focusing on dangerous driving as the primary factor in the crash.
They are continuing to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
Any road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity of Blanchardstown Road North, between 5pm and 6pm on Thursday December 26, and have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
