It may have been 50 or 60 years ago, but I remember it vividly, the pre-election promises delivered by megaphone as people streamed out of Mass on Sunday mornings. ‘Vote for me and we’ll get the Shannon drained. The other crowd won’t, but we will.’

Kilkerrin – my home parish in north Galway – is nearly 30 miles from the Shannon, but for political opportunism purposes, was deemed to be in its catchment area.
