Met Éireann is warning of “unseasonably strong and gusty south to southwest winds with spells of heavy rain and coinciding with very high tides” for Counties Galway and Mayo, mostly felt in coastal areas and on higher ground.
The status yellow rain and wind warning is in place until 2.30am on Thursday, with potential for coastal flooding, wave overtopping, localised flooding, damage to temporary structures and difficult travelling conditions.

Met Éireann said that elsewhere in the country it will be generally breezy on Wednesday evening, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, mainly over north Connacht and Ulster.
“A band of heavier rain and strong to gale force south to southwest winds will move in along the west coast later in the evening,” forecasters said.
“This will coincide with very high tides, which may result in coastal flooding and wave overtopping.”
They warned that tonight will become wet and windy as rain spreads eastwards, heavy at times and accompanied by strong, gusty southerly winds, with gales along parts of the west coast.
“Rain will clear eastwards from most parts overnight and winds will veer westerly and decrease moderate to fresh. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees,” Met Éireann said.
On Thursday, remaining rain in the east will clear early in the day and there will be sunny spells and a few scattered showers for much of the day.
“In the late afternoon, rain will develop in the southwest and will spread northeastwards through the evening, becoming heavy in places,” the forecaster said, with highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with mostly moderate west to southwest winds.
Giving the national outlook over the next few days, Met Éireann said: “The weather will continue rather cool and unsettled with further spells of rain or showers and rather windy or breezy at times. However it won’t be as blustery over the weekend as recently, with some longer drier spells mixed in too and some sunshine, the best of this on Saturday.”
Met Éireann said Sunday will start off mostly dry, with some sunshine for a time, especially in the midlands and east.
“However it’s likely to become cloudier for a time from the west with some showery rain spreading eastwards. Becoming drier and brighter again later. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees,” it said.
“After a mainly dry start to Monday, it looks like weather will become more unsettled once again early next week, with further spells of wet and blustery weather on the way.”
