The full W6 bus route was delayed due to works to widen the Hazelhatch Bridge. However, the route, which will connect Kildare and west Dublin, is expected to be fully operational by the end of November.
Fine Gael TD Emer Higgins shared an update on social media and said she had “great news for commuters”.
“The NTA has just confirmed to me that the full W6 route is expected to be operational by the end of November 2024, pending a few final safety checks,” she said.
“This is something I have been pushing for during my time as your local TD, and I know this will be a huge boost for residents, especially students from Rathcoole, Saggart, and Newcastle, who will have better access to Celbridge and Maynooth.
“While there have been delays with the widening of Hazelhatch Bridge, we’re finally seeing progress, and I’ll continue to work with the NTA to ensure a smooth rollout.”
The W6 route, which is part of Dublin’s BusConnects Network Redesign, is an orbital route introduced to improve transit connections between western and southern Dublin suburbs without needing to go through the city centre.
Launched in Phase 5B, the W6 is designed to support residents with efficient public transport options, linking key areas while enhancing accessibility for work, school, and essential services.
The new route is part of a broader redesign strategy aimed at increasing transit capacity, service frequency, and evening and weekend availability across the city.
The route will serve the areas of Newcastle, Saggart, Citywest, Tallaght, Liffey Valley, Lucan, Blanchardstown, Hazelhatch, Maynooth, and Celbridge.
