After eight decades of using different venues and wishing for a home of its own, Tralee Boxing Club can finally look forward to a permanent facility.
The sod will be turned on Tuesday (June 4) by Mayor of Tralee Terry O’Brien and Mayor of Kerry Jim Finucane making way for phase one of a new clubhouse at Deane’s Lane.
In 2023, Tralee Boxing Club received over €1 million from the Department for Rural and Community Development towards a state-of-the-art building that caters for an expanding club.
Formed in 1936, the club is heavily invested in the community and has opened its doors to diverse groups enabling them to discover the fitness and mental health benefits from the sport.
It its 88-year history, the club has never had a place to call home. Lohercannon, Ballymullen, Monavalley, and Strand Street are just some of the locations used in that time.
The club has welcomed Ukrainians in recent years, which has assisted in their integration to Kerry. It also hosts classes for women from the local Muslim community.
People with additional needs have equally found their mojo at Tralee Boxing Club where regular training sessions are provided. This helps to enhance confidence, self-esteem, and inclusion.
The sod turning marks a proud day for members of Tralee Boxing Club, past and present. The ceremony starts at 10:30am on June 4 at Deane’s Lane, Tralee.
