Captain Niall Murphy bagged 2-6 before being rested for a final quarter which they played with 14 men after substitute Keelan Cawley picked up two yellow cards.

Having scored 2-21 against Wexford last week, they racked up 3-22 by the final whistle here.

The groan of the crowd when the five added minutes were announced summed up the mood in Thurles, although they were rewarded with a Stephen Grogan consolation goal.

Sligo kicked the first four points and opened up a 0-7 to 0-1 lead before long. Every score was worked in open play, with Murphy slotting three and two more from Patrick O’Connor.

There were goal chances at either end but the visitors had more of them and eventually made them count.

Alan McLoughlin was fouled for a penalty, dispatched off the post by Murphy in the 31st minute. From the kick-out, Lee Deignan struck the crossbar but they worked the ball back in for Seán Carrabine to finish. 2-11 to 0-5 at half-time.

There were two changes on either side at the break. Tipp gave Eoghan Power a debut, while Sligo’s Cawley lasted 20 minutes before receiving his second yellow for an off-the-ball scrap.

By then, the gap had been stretched to 15; 3-15 to 0-9. Murphy sidestepped in the third goal before the fourth official raised his number. McLaughlin assisted that score; he gave the final pass or won a free for 2-5 of their total.

The biggest home cheer was reserved for a Mark Russell point which was awarded after a HawkEye delay of nearly two minutes.

Half-back Darragh Cummins pushed forward for the second half and finished with 0-4 to match Patrick O’Connor, while Carrabine ended with 1-3.

Place-kicking goalkeeper Evan Comerford and Seán O’Connor led the scoring stakes for the hosts with four points each.
