A woman who died in a car crash in Co Mayo on Thursday evening has been named locally as Lizy Abraham Saju.

Ms Abraham Saju (63), a native of India, was a rear seat passenger in a car which collided with a camper van on the N59 between Newport and Mulranny around 4.30 p.m. on Thursday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms. Abraham Saju, who was a nurse employed by Allenfield Nursing Homes, was part of a family group taking a break in the west Mayo area.

Two other occupants of the same vehicle, a male and a female, are being treated in hospital for what are described as “serious injuries”.

Four other occupants of the camper van were also taken to Mayo University Hospital for injuries stated to be “non – life threatening”.

Ms Abraham Saju, who has been described as a conscientious and caring nurse, was employed by Allenfield Nursing Homes.

A married woman, she lived with her family in Kill, Co. Kildare.

A post mortem examination has been conducted at Mayo University Hospital and an inquest will take place in due course.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident, are asked to make the footage available to gardaí.
