One man has died and three gardaí were injured in a fire that broke out in Naas, Co Kildare overnight.

The man died after the blaze in a residential building in Oldtown Demesne at around 4.15am this morning.

Gardaí evacuated the building and the fire was brought under control, however, three officers who responded to the incident have received medical treatment.

Gardaí said they and emergency services responded to a fire in a residential building in Naas, Co Kildare in the early hours of this morning.

“Gardaí evacuated the building and the fire was brought under control by fire services,” the Garda Press Office said.

“One male was pronounced deceased; his body remains at the scene. The scene of the incident is currently preserved for a technical examination and enquiries are ongoing.

“Three members of An Garda Síochána received medical attention following the incident.

Cllr Bill Clear, who lives near where it happened, praised gardaí for their quick actions.

“I think there’s about 20 apartments in that block itself. It’s surrounded by other blocks but the gardaí came and evacuated very quickly,” he told KFM Radio.

“They were absolutely on the ball, excellent, and people got out as quickly as they could.”
