OPW spent €120,000 on 12 electric car chargers at Leinster House

The Office of Public Works (OPW) spent at least €120,000 installing 12 electric car charging ports at Leinster House, with one soon damaged in a collision and an official complaint made that they were a danger to health and safety.

Internal records also detail trouble in getting a system up and running to ensure TDs and senators were charged for the electricity they used to power their vehicles.

One senior official wrote of being under “serious pressure” to have a mechanism for payment in place as demand grew for environmentally friendly options in the parliamentary complex.

The Oireachtas claimed it was having trouble getting answers on two existing car charging points even as a clamour for better facilities continued.
