All Irish eyes will be on the exploits of world champion Daniel Wiffen in the pool just after 8pm, with the 23-year-old the hot favourite to land gold in the 800m freestyle final.
Wiffen, who won both the 800m and the 1500m at the World Championships in Doha earlier this, advanced to the biggest race of his life in 7:41.53 and was the fastest qualifier.
Defending champion Bobby Finke of the USA, Tunisian teenager Ahmed Jaouadi, Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri and Elijah Winnington – who Wiffen accounted for in the heats – are the other realistic contenders for gold.
Early birds can tune in to RTÉ2 for coverage of the men’s triathlon from 6.55am, with rowers Zoe Hyde and Alison Bergin the first Irish in action from around 9.50am.
Former taekwondo star Jennifer Lehane fights in boxing’s bantamweight division at 11.36am, while the afternoon action sees Ireland pitted against India in men’s hockey, Abigail Lyle and her mount Giraldo feature in individual dressage, Noel Hendrick and Michaela Corcoran take to the canoe course, Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove continue their skiff race in sailing and Rachael Darragh will be on court in badminton.
You can follow the Olympic Games action all day with our live tracker on RTÉ Sport Online and the RTÉ News app, watch live from 6.55am on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, and listen to updates on RTÉ Radio 1 and 2fm.
