There was nothing to separate Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry in the golf competition at the Tokyo Games, with the Irish stars finishing in a share of seventh alongside Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond and Paul Casey of Team GB as now two-time major winner Xander Schauffele triumphed for the USA.
Scottie Scheffler is edging favouritism over his in-form compatriot to land gold at Le Golf National, just ahead of the Holywood world number three.
The competition follows the same format as standard tour golf, individual stroke play, with the top three after four rounds taking the medals.
Ireland’s show jumping team will be chasing a top-10 finish to advance to the final of the competition, while Noel Hendrick will also have his sights focused on a final spot in the K1 event in the canoe slalom.
Tom Fannon and Shane Ryan take to the blocks for the splash-and-dash that is swimming’s 50m freestyle, with the semi-finals scheduled for the night session at La Defense Arena.
Ireland’s men’s hockey side, who have tasted defeat in their three games to date, return to action against Argentina in Pool B.
Flyweight boxer Daina Moorehouse faces a home hope in the form of Wassila Lkhadiri in the round of 16, while heavyweight Jack Marley will guarantee himself at least a bronze medal with a victory over Davlat Boltaev of Tajikistan.
Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch will be pursuing podium places in the final of the double sculls, while Finn Lynch, Eve McMahon, and Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove will be in action in rather different boats.
For Dickson and Waddilove, a medal remains a realistic goal, with the pair second overnight before the men’s skiff medal race.
