Parties, candidates to canvass as campaign continues

The second full day of campaigning in the General Election will get under way this morning, with political parties and independent candidates out canvassing.

Sinn Féin, the Labour Party and the Social Democrats will hold events in Dublin, while the party leaders from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will be touring the country.

There have been no big surprises in the General Election campaign, at least so far, with many parties and independent candidates reporting that expected issues – such as the high cost of living, and housing – are being raised with them on the doorsteps.

After campaigning in the southeast yesterday, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald will be in Dublin, including attending the ‘Save Moore Street’ rally where she will address the crowd.

Afterwards she will attend the Remembrance Sunday Service at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Ms McDonald will also be taking part in canvassing in Rathmines.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik will also be in Dublin to unveil her General Election candidates.

Gary Gannon and Róisín Shortall of the Social Democrats, as well as the party’s other candidates running in the capital, will publish a comprehensive plan to breathe life back into Dublin city centre.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was on home turf yesterday in Co Cork but will campaign in Co Tipperary today, starting with a canvass in Clonmel.

Meanwhile Fine Gael leader Simon Harris will be doing a whistlestop tour leaving Cork to visit Limerick, Galway and Athlone, before heading to Dublin.
